About Organization :

Sugarcane is the second most important industrial crop in the country occupying about 5 million hectares area. India is the second largest producer of sugar after Brazil. Over 5 million farmers are involved in the cultivation of sugarcane. Sugar industry contributes significantly to the rural economy as the sugar mills are located in the rural areas and provides employment for nearly 4% of the population directly or indirectly. The various by-products of sugar industry also contribute to the economic growth by promoting a number of subsidiary industries. Sugarcane is emerging as a multi-product crop used as a basic raw material for the production of sugar, ethanol, electricity, paper and high value bio molecules, besides a host of ancillary products. India is the second largest producer of sugar, our export share is marginal due to large domestic demands. Sugar is an essential item of mass consumption and the cheapest source of energy, supplying around 10% of the daily calorie intake. The importance of the sugarcane agriculture is that it is able to meet the huge domestic requirement, which otherwise would have necessitated massive imports. Domestic price of sugar in India is lowest among the world. The cost of Indian sugar production is estimated to be in the medium range higher than that of Australia and Brazil but lower than that of USA. In future, we may face stiff competition from Latin American Countries, Africa, and South East Asian countries where the cost of production of sugar is low.
