Sanjay Kumar Verma, the outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Canada who was targeted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that declaring him a ‘person of interest’ came as a shock to him. The envoy, who has since been recalled by New Delhi on Thursday asserted that Khalistani terrorists and extremists have found refuge in Canada due to the country’s lenient legal system.

The outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Canada further accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of ruining the bilateral ties between the two countries for political gains.

The Indian diplomat’s comments came days after the Canadian government under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau labelled him and five other diplomats as ‘persons of interest’ in the murder investigation of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Indian Envoy Recalls What Happened

Recalling the moment when he came to know about the Canadian government’s allegations, “I was on a visit to Toronto. I was sitting at the airport, and I received a message from an interlocutor in global affairs in Canada, which is the Foreign Ministry in Canada, to be present before it in the evening.”

“Unfortunately, I was not available. They, however, agreed to receive me on next morning (October 13). After a bit of conversation they told me that I, along with five other diplomats and officials, are ‘persons of interest’ in the inquiry into the killing of (Hardeep Singh) Nijjar,” he added.

He further informed that following this, the authorities requested him to waive his diplomatic immunity, so they could be interrogated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the investigating agency there.

Indian Envoy On Khalistanis In Canada

Accusing the Khalistani terrorists and extremists of taking refuge in Canada, Verma alleged that the hard-line Khalistanis are doing human trafficking and gun running in Canada. He further accused them of collecting money through gurdwaras for nefarious business.

The Indian envoy also claimed that the Khalistanis intimidate other people belonging to Sikh community by threatening to target their daughters and families.
