How to Register for Your NBTs Online
Need to Write the NBT Online? Here’s How to Register
2024 Update
If you’re unable to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) in person, there’s now an updated process for registering to write them online via the official NBT website.
Who Qualifies to Write Online?
Only students considered remote—either living in another country or too far from a testing centre to travel a reasonable distance—are eligible to apply for online testing.
Steps to Register as a Remote Writer
Remote students must follow specific procedures, including securing a qualified proctor (invigilator) and emailing a request to write online to nbtremote@uct.ac.za.
The proctor must meet the following criteria:
Cannot be a friend or family member.
Must receive the test materials (not the student).
Must supervise the test in a secure, quiet setting.
Must ensure no use of external resources or assistance.
Must mail the completed test scripts directly to the NBT Project.
Must not duplicate or copy any test materials or responses.
What to Expect After You Email
Within two days of contacting the NBT remote office, you should receive a response with:
A cover letter
A concession form (to be completed by the student, proctor, and test site)
A Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement (for the proctor)
An Invigilator Responsibilities and Agreement form (for the proctor)
If your application is approved, you and your proctor will receive confirmation letters. Your confirmation will include payment details and courier address information.
Final Steps
Complete and return all required forms along with proof of payment.
Once payment is confirmed, you’ll receive your NBT reference number—which is often needed by universities to access your test results.
Please Note:
All costs (proctor, courier, venue, and test fee) are the applicant’s responsibility.
Test materials will only be released once all payments are verified.
The proctor’s name and address must be provided for courier collection.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to maintain contact with the proctor throughout the process.
