How to Sign Up for Your NBTs Online
If you need to take the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) but can’t attend in person, here’s how to register for the online option.
The registration process has been updated, allowing you to sign up on the NBT website for either in-person or online testing.
Remote learners are permitted to take the NBTs online, but this applies only to those residing in another country or in areas that are too far from the nearest testing center.
To register as a remote writer, you will need to follow specific steps. First, you’ll need to arrange for a test proctor or invigilator and send an email to the NBT mailbox to request permission to take the tests online.
Your chosen proctor must be a credible individual—not a friend or family member—and should:
Receive the mailed tests rather than taking delivery directly from you.
Ensure the security and confidentiality of the test materials while overseeing the test in a quiet setting.
Prevent any use of unauthorized resources, such as notes or outside help.
Mail the original completed tests to the NBT Project without making any copies or reproducing your answers.
To initiate the process, email nbtremote@uct.ac.za to request the opportunity to take the test online.
You should receive a response within two days,
which will include a cover letter, a concession form that requires details about you, your proctor, and the testing site, a Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Agreement for the proctor, and an Invigilator Responsibilities Agreement.
If your application is approved, both you and your proctor will receive confirmation letters. Your confirmation will contain payment details and the address for courier collection or delivery.
Complete all required forms and return them to the designated NBT contact, along with proof of payment.
Once the NBT team receives your proof of payment, you will be assigned an NBT reference number, which is crucial for universities and tertiary institutions to access your NBT results.
It’s important to note that you will be responsible for compensating your proctor, as well as covering courier and venue costs. Test materials will only be dispatched to couriers once all payments have been completed.
When arranging for courier pickup from the NBT office, ensure that you provide the proctor’s name and address. Remember, maintaining communication with your proctor is essential throughout this process.
