What Are the NBTs?

The National Benchmark Tests are used to assess how prepared you are for the academic challenges of university.

The Two NBT Tests: AQL and MAT

There are two types of tests:

AQL (Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy)
MAT (Mathematics)
The AQL test is compulsory for all students, while the MAT test is required for certain programs, depending on your faculty’s requirements. For instance, students applying for programs in fields like Engineering, Accounting, or Science usually need to write both the AQL and MAT tests.

If you’re taking the MAT test, you must also write the AQL test, as MAT cannot be written on its own. Both tests are in multiple-choice format and are timed, giving you three hours to complete each test.
