Learnerships: Unlocking Potential and Growth

Sharon: Overcoming Challenges and Inspiring Others Through Learnerships at EduPower Skills Academy

Sharon, a 21-year-old with severe vision impairment, has transformed her challenges into strengths, becoming a mentor and leader during her time at EduPower Skills Academy. Her resilience and drive have earned her additional responsibilities, making her a standout example of what can be achieved with determination and support.

At just 21, Sharon is already making a significant impact. Her vision impairment has not been a barrier, but rather a source of motivation, pushing her to achieve more. As a mentor to her peers in the learnership program at EduPower, she’s proving that ambition and hard work can turn obstacles into opportunities.

A Day in the Life of Sharon

Morning Routine

“My day starts early,” says Sharon. “I wake up at 5:00 am, and by 5:30 am, I’m ready to start the day.” After a quick breakfast, she packs her lunch, tidies her room, and prepares for her journey to EduPower, setting off at 7:00 am. The commute gives her time to mentally prepare for the day ahead.

Daily Activities at EduPower

Sharon arrives at EduPower ahead of the 8:00 am roll call. Earlier this year, in February, she began her learnership, pursuing a National Certificate in Contact Centre and Business Process Outsourcing Support (NQF Level 3). The initial three months were focused on classroom learning, followed by hands-on work experience in EduPower’s 800-seat Career Centre.

“My first time working with the dialler was intimidating,” Sharon recalls, “but once I got familiar with the system, I became more confident.” Her administrative skills quickly made her an integral part of the team, and she was soon tasked with mentoring fellow learners.

“My days are spent on administrative duties and helping others,” she explains. “I track attendance, liaise with management, and handle client queries.”

Mentorship and Growth

The supportive culture at EduPower has been essential to Sharon’s progress. “Even though I’m a mentor, I still receive a lot of guidance from my colleagues and mentors,” she says. “They check in daily to ensure I’m on the right path.”

Throughout the learnership, Sharon has honed crucial skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These tools have enhanced her confidence and are used daily in her work with clients.

Evening Routine

After wrapping up her day at EduPower by 4 pm, Sharon heads home, a short 20-minute journey. Evenings for her are a mix of helping with household chores, relaxing with a good series, and reflecting on the day’s lessons.

“This learnership has given me more than just skills—it’s given me a clear vision for my future,” she says. “I’m not just building a career; I’m building a life with purpose.”

Sharon plans to continue her studies after completing her learnership, with aspirations to pursue a career that integrates her IT and customer service expertise.

A Bright Future Ahead

While this may be a typical day for an EduPower learner, Sharon’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that, with determination and the right support, any learner can overcome challenges and achieve success. Her story at EduPower showcases the true potential of learnerships and the life-changing impact they can have.
