NBT Costs Explained: Fees and Payment Methods
How Much Do the NBTs Cost and How Do You Pay?
If you’re planning to pursue tertiary studies in South Africa, you may need to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) as part of the admission requirements at your chosen institution. Here’s a breakdown of the costs involved and how to make your payment.
What is the NBT?
The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is a standardized exam created by the National Benchmark Test Project. It evaluates a student’s:
Academic Literacy (AQL)
Quantitative Literacy
Mathematical Skills (MAT)
These tests help universities assess whether a student is ready for academic study at tertiary level.
NBT Test Types and Costs
You may be required to write one or both of the following tests:
Test Type | Cost |
---|---|
AQL only | R125 |
AQL + MAT | R250 |
💡 Note: You cannot write the MAT test only. It must be written together with the AQL.
If you need to make changes to your booking, you can do so before the closing date listed on the official NBT test schedule.
How to Pay for the NBT
All NBT fees must be paid via EasyPay. There are two main ways to make payment:
1. Pay at an EasyPay Paypoint
EasyPay is available at major retailers like Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, and Spar.
Take your NBT registration letter with you when you go to pay.
2. Pay Online via EasyPay
Visit the EasyPay website, complete the payment, and print out your receipt.
International Students or Areas Without EasyPay Access
If you’re outside South Africa or don’t have access to EasyPay services, you can pay via EFT or direct bank deposit using the following details:
Bank: Standard Bank
Account Name: UCT
Account Number: 071503854
Branch Code: 025009
Reference: NBT231500
SWIFT Code: SBZAZAJJ (for international payments)
✅ Important:
After making the payment, send proof of payment to the NBT Project via:
Email: adp-cetap@uct.ac.za
Fax: 021 650 5331
Be sure to include your:
14-digit NBT Reference Number
Full Name
ID or Passport Number
Your NBT results will not be released unless proof of payment is received.
What If My Test Gets Rescheduled?
If the NBT Project cancels and reschedules your test session (e.g., due to public health concerns), you will not need to pay again for the new test date.
