Colleges Offering Nursing Courses Across South Africa
Nursing in South Africa: Courses, Qualifications & Career Opportunities
Nurses make up nearly half of all healthcare workers in South Africa — and with events like the global pandemic highlighting their importance, the demand for qualified nurses continues to grow.
Private colleges and higher education institutions across the country offer a range of nursing courses to help meet this demand. Nursing studies combine classroom learning with practical clinical experience, preparing students for a variety of roles.
Types of Nurses in South Africa
Nursing roles are determined by qualification level and experience:
Registered Nurses (RNs) – Supervise other nurses and perform advanced nursing duties.
Enrolled Nurses (ENs) – Provide limited nursing care under supervision.
Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries (ENAs) – Assist with basic care and patient procedures.
While many nurses work in hospitals, others find opportunities in corporate healthcare, sports medicine, community care, and private practice.
