NSFAS Clarifies ‘Provisionally Funded Subject to Registration and Availability of Funds’ Status

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), which offers bursaries and student loans to qualifying students enrolled in universities and TVET colleges, has explained what the status ‘Provisionally Funded Subject to Registration and Availability of Funds’ means.

NSFAS provides financial support for tuition, registration fees, and allowances for food, accommodation, and study materials to eligible students.

What Does ‘Provisionally Funded – Subject to Registration and Availability of Funds’ Mean?

This status indicates that your application for NSFAS funding has been approved. However, NSFAS is still waiting for confirmation of your registration from the institution where you have enrolled for the academic year. Once your registration is confirmed, your funding will be fully approved.

The “availability of funds” refers to NSFAS’s budget. If there are sufficient funds, your financial support will be confirmed and cover your tuition, fees, and allowances. In recent years, NSFAS has successfully funded all approved applicants.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?

To be eligible for NSFAS bursaries, you must meet the following criteria:

  • South African Citizenship or Permanent Residency: Only South African citizens and permanent residents can apply.
  • Household Income: Your combined household income should not exceed R350,000 per year. Students receiving SASSA grants qualify automatically.
  • Loan Option: For students from families earning between R350,000 and R600,000 annually, NSFAS also offers a loan scheme.

Students must be enrolled in an approved course at a university or TVET college to qualify for funding.

NSFAS reminds applicants to ensure the accuracy of the information they provide, especially regarding household income, to avoid delays or issues with funding approval.
