Registering for the NBT: What You Need to Do

How to Register for the National Benchmark Test (NBT)

Some South African universities require applicants to submit both their National Senior Certificate (NSC) results and National Benchmark Test (NBT) scores to determine academic readiness for admission.

Here’s everything you need to know about registering for the NBT.

What is the NBT?

Introduced in 2008, the National Benchmark Test is a set of exams designed to evaluate:

  • Academic Literacy (AL)

  • Quantitative Literacy (QL)

  • Mathematical ability

These tests assess whether a student is prepared to cope with the academic demands of university study.

NBT Test Structure

There are two separate tests:

  1. AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy)

    • Multiple-choice format

    • 3-hour test

    • Written by all applicants, regardless of study programme

  2. MAT (Mathematics)

    • Multiple-choice format

    • 3-hour test

    • Required only for applicants applying to degree programmes that require mathematics (e.g., engineering, science, commerce)

⚠️ Note: You may write the AQL test on its own, but the MAT test must be written together with the AQL—it cannot be written as a standalone test.
