Registration for the National Benchmark Tests in 2023 Is Now Open
If you’re planning to study at a university in 2024, you may need to complete the National Benchmark Test (NBT) as part of your application process. Here’s everything you need to know about registering for the 2023 NBTs.
The NBT is designed to evaluate a student’s readiness for higher education. Universities use these results to assess the academic skills and potential for success of applicants.
There are two main types of NBTs:
Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL):
This test evaluates your ability to comprehend and analyze complex written information.
Mathematics (MAT): This test measures your competency in essential mathematical concepts.
Not all programs require the MAT test, so it’s important to check with your intended course or university before registering.
All students applying for undergraduate programs at South African universities are required to take the NBT. The results help institutions determine whether additional academic support may be needed for students to thrive in their chosen fields.
2023 NBT Registration
Registration for the AQL and MAT tests opened on 3 April 2023. You can sign up for the NBT online via their website. The fees are as follows:
AQL only: R145
AQL and MAT: R290
Re-mark fee: R250
You have the option to take the tests either online from home or in-person at a designated test center. Be sure to check the website for specific test dates and requirements to select your preferred method.
If you need to adjust your test date, changes can be made up until the registration deadline. After that, no further modifications will be allowed.
