What is the SANDF and Its Functions?

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF)

represents the country’s armed forces, dedicated to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of South Africa and its citizens. It consists of several branches: the South African Army, South African Navy, South African Military Health Service, and South African Air Force.

Oversight of the SANDF falls under the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, who also supervises the Department of Defence and the Department of Military Veterans. In 1994, the SANDF inherited personnel and equipment from the former South African Defence Force (SADF), leading to significant transformations in its resources, workforce, and operational missions over the years.

Vision

To provide effective defense for a democratic South Africa.

Mission

“To enable, prepare, employ, sustain, and renew defense capabilities in line with the requirements of South Africa, as outlined by the Constitution, National Legislation, and the directives from Parliament and the Executive.”
