If you’re planning to live, study, or work in an English-speaking country, you can take one of three IELTS tests through the British Council:
- IELTS Academic: Ideal for those looking to pursue higher education (undergraduate or postgraduate) or work in a professional organization where English proficiency is required.
- IELTS General Training: Suitable for those applying to study below degree level, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country.
- IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration: Required for individuals looking to work, study, or reside in the UK.

The British Council offers IELTS testing at five official centres across South Africa: Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Pretoria. You can choose to take the test on paper or on a computer, but regardless of your choice, you must visit a test centre to complete the exam.
