Unique Learning Adventures with Class Afloat

Are you a student approaching graduation but seeking an adventure unlike any other? Class Afloat offers a unique opportunity to earn your high school diploma while sailing the globe, reminiscent of a thrilling television series.

The Class Afloat program enables students to spend a year volunteering in various countries, immersing themselves in diverse cultures while accumulating academic credits.

Aboard the Alexander Von Humboldt II, a dedicated team of 48 students, 7 faculty members, and 24 mariners collaborate to navigate an impressive 15,000 nautical miles (about 28,000 kilometers) across the open sea.

Students will work alongside a professional crew, learning the art of sailing a tall ship, experiencing the thrill of blue-water sailing, and maintaining a lower carbon footprint. With the potential to cover up to 30,000 kilometers annually, they’ll visit 20 destinations across three continents.

High school students can choose to enroll in the Class Afloat program for either a single semester lasting four and a half months or a full nine-month academic year. This intensive program allows participants to earn Grade 11 or Grade 12 high school credits recognized by the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Course offerings include engaging subjects such as English, Humanities, Mathematics, and Sciences, along with a unique course on the Sociology of Community and Marine Biology. Students also receive tailored support to prepare for the SAT exams, which assess readiness for higher education.

Additionally, high school students have access to post-secondary counseling and placement services, including personalized portfolio development and English Language support.

Graduates of high school are also welcome to join the Class Afloat program and can earn university credits from Arcadia University.

Students can gain first-year university credits in a variety of subjects, including Leadership, Astronomy, Sociology, Psychology, Communications, Marine Biology, and Nutrition. These credits are transferable to universities across Canada, the United States, and globally.

Beyond academics, the program emphasizes cultural exploration, leadership skills, personal growth, and community service, providing a well-rounded educational experience.
