Varsity Vibe 2024 Student Spend Survey – Insights into Student Spending

The Reality of Student Spending: Varsity Vibe 2024 Survey Insights

University life is often seen as a thrilling chapter of newfound independence — filled with late-night study sessions, social adventures, and the juggling act of managing money. But where exactly do students spend their cash?

The Varsity Vibe 2024 Student Spend Survey, with over 18,800 responses across South Africa, sheds light on this very question. The findings reveal that many students are caught off guard by the real cost of living once they move out and start taking care of their own shopping.

Groceries & Household Essentials top the list as the largest monthly expense, with students spending an average of R1,701. Nearly half of the respondents (49.58%) say this category takes up the biggest chunk of their budget, highlighting the financial pressure of everyday necessities.

Takeout culture is also a significant factor, with 38.36% of students spending a notable portion of their funds on convenience foods. While home-cooked meals save money, the busy demands of university life — packed classes, assignments, and social events — make grabbing takeout a tempting, and often necessary, choice.

Socializing and entertainment costs come next, averaging around R796 per month.

Students also prioritize fashion and beauty, spending an average of R992 monthly on clothing and accessories. About 31% allocate a good part of their budget to cosmetics, including skincare and makeup products.

Financial independence is a steep learning curve, but support is available. Partnerships with brands like Dis-Chem, Superbalist, H&M, and Nando’s offer students discounts on groceries, self-care, fashion, and food — helping them make smarter purchases without missing out on what they love.

As living costs continue to rise, Varsity Vibe remains committed to helping students live better for less and #NeverPayFullPrice.
