What Are the Minimum Requirements for Further Studies in Higher Certificates, Diplomas, and Bachelor Degrees?
Higher Certificate

To gain admission for a Higher Certificate, you must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 30% in the language of instruction at the higher education institution, as validated by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council. Additional subject combinations or levels of achievement may be required depending on institutional and program-specific criteria.

Diploma

For a Diploma, the minimum requirement is also a National Senior Certificate, with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching certified by Umalusi. Additionally, you must achieve a rating of 3 (indicating moderate achievement, 40% – 49%) or higher in four recognized 20-credit subjects from the designated list. Like with Higher Certificates, specific institutions and programs may have additional requirements regarding subjects and achievement levels.

Bachelor’s Degree

To qualify for a Bachelor’s Degree program, you must obtain a National Senior Certificate and achieve a rating of 4 (indicating adequate achievement, 50% – 59%) or higher in four designated subjects. Acceptable subjects include Accounting, Information Technology, Agricultural Sciences, Languages, Business Studies, Life Sciences, Consumer Studies, Mathematics, Dramatic Arts, Mathematical Literacy, Economics, Music, Engineering Graphics and Design, Physical Sciences, Geography, Religion Studies, History, and Visual Arts.
