What Are the NBTs? A Guide to the National Benchmark Tests

If you’re applying to university, chances are you’ll need to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). Before you register, there are a few important things to understand. We’ve also included the steps for how to register.

What Are the NBTs?
The National Benchmark Tests assess your academic readiness for university-level studies. Universities use the results to better understand your strengths in key areas.

The Two Types of NBTs: AQL and MAT
There are two components of the NBTs:

AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy): This test is compulsory for all applicants.

MAT (Mathematics): This test is optional, depending on your chosen programme.

You can only write the MAT if you’re also writing the AQL — it cannot be taken on its own. The MAT is typically required for degrees that involve mathematics, such as Engineering, Accounting, or Science.

Test Format
Both the AQL and MAT are multiple-choice tests. Each section is timed, and you’ll have a total of 3 hours to complete each test.

Before You Register
Make sure to check the specific requirements of the faculty or programme you’re applying to. Some programmes require only the AQL, while others require both tests.

To register, visit the official NBT website.

🗓️ UPDATE: Registration for the 2025 NBTs opens on 1 April.
