What is the SASSA R2090 Grant?
In South Africa, only one SASSA grant is commonly identified by its specific monetary amount. The recent mention of a R2090 grant has sparked curiosity among the public. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the payment values for its grants throughout 2024, including news about upcoming increases that will be welcome news for millions of South Africans.

SASSA provides various permanent grants designed to support financially vulnerable individuals in the country. These include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up, and Grant-in-aid.
The Careers Portal has been flooded with inquiries about the so-called “SASSA R2090 grant.” Reports and social media posts referring to this grant have caused confusion among beneficiaries and the public.
This misunderstanding arises from the fact that only one social grant in South Africa is typically recognized by its monetary value: the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly known as the R370 grant. Therefore, it is likely that the “SASSA R2090 grant” is not an official designation but rather refers to the monetary amount of an existing grant.
Several grants, such as the Older Persons grant, War Veterans grant, and Disability grant, previously had a monetary value of R2090. However, due to SASSA’s scheduled increases, the amounts of these grants have changed.
Typically, the first round of increases takes effect on April 1st, with another adjustment occurring on October 1st.
