Laptop, notebook and coffee laid out for writing a cover letter

Keep it to 150–200 words. Recruiters read the first two lines and then open your CV.

Line 1: the exact job title and reference number from the advert. Line 2: your discipline and years of experience. Line 3: one measurable achievement relevant to the role.

Line 4: why this employer specifically — a product, branch, client base or growth plan you can name. Line 5: your availability, notice period and contact details.

Do not repeat your CV, do not apologise for gaps, and never send a letter addressed to “Sir/Madam” when the advert names a contact person.

Save it as a PDF and paste the same text into the application message field so it is read even if the attachment is skipped.
