Never quote a number before you know whether the package is cost-to-company or basic plus benefits. In South Africa the difference can be 20–30% of your take-home pay.
Typical monthly ranges we see advertised: call centre agent R7 000–R12 000, admin assistant R10 000–R16 000, bookkeeper R18 000–R28 000, financial accountant R35 000–R50 000, mid-level developer R45 000–R75 000, registered nurse R30 000–R45 000, diesel mechanic R24 000–R35 000.
When asked for expectations, give a range with a reason: “Based on market data for this role in Gauteng and my six years of experience, I am targeting R38 000 to R44 000 cost-to-company.”
Factor in medical aid, provident fund, 13th cheque, travel allowance and overtime rules before comparing two offers — a lower basic with a strong benefit structure often wins.
Get the final offer in writing with start date, notice period, probation terms and the exact package breakdown before resigning from your current role.
